Chief Instructor Michael Tsivoglou. I started my martial arts journey in 1979 at the age of 7 studying Kyokushin Karate to age of 16 with an amateur karate career from the age of 7 to 16.
I started to cross training in Bob Jones Kickboxing then at 18years of age I started to train with Dana Goodson at Fitzroy All-star gym until I was 21years of age. At 20 years of age I started working in the bar/night club security industry and in personal protect (body guard) industry for individuals that needed protection. I quickly worked out the sports style martial arts didn’t prepare you for real world violence, sports style made you fit and strong, skilful and respectful but in real violence situation there is no fair play or honour so my way of thinking when it came to fighting had to change.
So I started training in systems that were more based in real world violence, at 22 I started to train Wing Chun Kung Fu for the reflex ,sticky hands and low kicking to joints and boxing for aggression and still training kickboxing for sparring, at 25 I got interested in grappling after a few altercations while working in the security industry I realised that close quarters control was very important and to have the ability to control where the fight was going to take place, standing, clinch or ground.
So I started in Japanese Jujitsu, Aikido, Judo and Wrestling as well as my Kickboxing and Wing Chun. At 28 I got the opportunity to try out for professional wrestling which I had been a fan of for many years. But unknown to me where I through it would be a bit of fun the old time wrestlers exposed me to a style of wrestling called Catch Wrestling, an extremely aggressive style of wrestling without all the etiquette of the traditional Japanese grappling systems which made it easier to use in the security industry.
I trained and taught kickboxing/Catch Wrestling and started to get interested in weapons more after a few incidents working in security where weapons were used. I trained weapons defence at 34years old. I started to train a bit with (Bob Jones Corp) Kali and with Mick Nicholls self defence system on and off as well as training Kickboxing/Catch Wrestling had become Shootfighting.
New Years Eve 2009 I was working an event and a very close friend of mine was trying to convince me to try a self defence system called Tactical Krav Maga. I was very skeptical at first after all the years I had trained that 1 style of martial arts could in body all the years of training I had put in, so after a lot of convincing by my friend I went to a class and was hook immediately, from 2009 to current.
I train and teach Tactical Krav Maga, Shootfighting(Mixed Martial Arts) and Catch Wrestling, this is my journey up to now and the journey will still continue because you never stop learning in Martial Arts and life in general.
